Asia's McQueen: Lie Sang Bong 韓国のイー・サンボンを紹介

He's been called "The Asian McQueen".
And certianly, while that has a punch, it sells Sang Bong short as he has a definitive
style (of cacophony, mind you) unique to his own. He employs geometry,
aerodynamics, origami and show-stopping adornment that should afford him a much
wider reputation than he currently has. Time for some schooling...


I caught sight of his work on the cover of Surface magazine and tucked his name
away in my "favorites" box for later...
I HAD to see his work up close so I used a piece in shoot when I was in Paris. The
photo with it doesn`t nearly do it justice, as it was a beautiful laminated cocoon
jacket with huge silk cord collar. Like if Wong Kar Wai had done Madame Butterfly.


「アジアのアレキサンダー・マックイーン」と呼ばれるようになったイ・サン
ボン。パンチの効いた作風に定評のあるイだが、Misha が評価しているのは、
パーフェクトに自分のミックススタイルというものを創り上げている彼の才
能。幾何学、空気力学、折り紙、そして、奇抜的な装飾‥‥。「いろいろな要
素が織り込まれた彼の美しい作品は、世間の注目をもっと集めてもおかしくな
いのに‥‥。」と思う。ここで宣伝しちゃおー。

「SURFACE」という雑誌の表紙を飾った彼のドレスがすごく気に入ったので、
その時から彼の作品のファンになった。そして、パリでの撮影が決まった時、すぐに彼
の服を使用すると決めた。スチールの写真じゃ作品の良さがなかなか伝わらな
いのが残念‥‥。
これは、シルクカラーとラミネートされたコクーンのコート。

As the most famous Korean designer he does have the support of some of the cool
kids: Beth Ditto, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Zhang Ziyi (who looks stunning in that
watercolor dress...!).

Below I have some of the definitive looks from his collections since 2004.
(an extremely arbitrary list of my own whims). Here it shows that he is a master of
layering and gradation that amounts to optical illusions. It's totally futuristic, but also
subtly Asian as well-- in fact, I think he does "Asian fusion" fashion design better
than any other I`ve ever seen.

ここで、2004年以降の彼のコレクション作品の中から、自分が気に入った作
品を紹介。掲載写真の作品のように、彼はレイヤーやグラデーションを使って
幻想的な雰囲気が漂う作品を創り出すことができるデザイナー。すごく近未来
系だけれど、アジアっぽいテイストも入っている。

アジア系と西洋系をフュージョンさせるのはとても難しいことだけれど、彼は
それらを上手に融合させることができる。彼の作品は、コレクションを重ねる
だび、彼の作品は面白みを増し続けている。

Lie was in Tokyo last year to test the waters in launching his line here and
participate in an exhibition at Spiral Hall. I sat down for coffee with him there to talk
about his designs--he was very gracious, focused, and answered all of my questions
as he chainsmoked (without touching the coffee).

I did ask him if he could ever see Japan and Korea working on a fashion event
together, or sharing a fashion week. He thought about it (like the idea had never
occured to him) before saying "That would be tough, I think." Mm-hm...

In any case, his work just keeps getting more and more techinically grandiose every
season so make sure to keep his name tucked in your brain wrinkles when in
Paris/Seoul...


去年、彼が、久しぶりに東京に来た。「まだ日本上陸は達成できていないが、
もしかしたら近い将来、ローンチできるかもしれない。」と説明してくれた。
スパイラル・ホールで行われた展示会に参加していたので、そこで一緒にコー
ヒーのみながらコレクションのことなどについて、いろいろ話を聞いた。タバ
コをチェインスモーキングをしながら、丁寧に質問を答えてくれた(コーヒー
は一口も飲まずに）。

Misha が、「日本と韓国は、いつかファッションイベントやコレクション
ウィークなどで、コラボレーションをすることができると思う？」と彼に尋ね
たら、ちょっと驚いた顔をして、「難しいかもしれないね」と答えた。やっぱ
りそうだね・・。
